How you choose to finish your carvings can have a profound effect on the finished work. It’s easy to rely on the beauty of the wood to carry your carving focussing only on smooth clear finishing. This Two-Day Wood Texturing and Finishing workshop is designed to take you further into the exploration of finishing techniques, and the use of colour and texture to add vibrance and character to your work. 
 
What happens in the workshop?
 
This workshop begins with you carving a set of three sample tiles to explore different types of texturing techniques and finishing techniques and mediums. These practice tiles are beautiful objects in themselves that may be mounted and displayed.
 
You will then move on to carve at least one vessel, platter or cup and embellish it using texture and colour, you will explore your own designs and find your unique voice. You can choose to carve animals and apply these techniques as well if you prefer.
 
This creative experience that explores:
 
Carving techniques and tools
Relief carved patterns
Textured surfaces
Milk paint, acrylics and pigments
Charring
Applying shellac and oils
 
The work will be informed by patterns from nature and designs used in both traditional and contemporary art forms. By the end of this workshop, you will have not only created a series of original works, yet also developed several key skills that you can take forward on your carving and finishing journey.
 
How long is the class?
 
Wood Texturing & Finishing is a two-day workshop held over the weekend of Saturday & Sunday November 2 & 3. Each day starts at 9.00am and concludes at 4.00pm. Places in the class are limited to eight so you are assured to receive all the support you may need. Refreshments are provided, please bring your own lunch.
 
Do I need tools or equipment?
 
All tools, materials and templates are supplied. Wood Play Studio recommends all participants wear sturdy shoes and clothes suitable for woodworking. Participants in this class must be 18 years of age and well enough to stand for several hours at a time lifting 2kg with each arm. 
 
Who is Carol Russell
 
Carol is an Australian carver and wood artist who specialises in carving spoons, vessels and small forms. Carol is an experienced and caring instructor who is passionate about sharing her knowledge and helping you develop your craft skills.
