Half Day Introduction to CNC Routing Workshop - Morning

8.30am to 12.30pm

Saturday November 16

The Wood Play Studio

Level 2, 69 Charles Street

Coburg 3058

The new Master of Manufacturing have emerged, and they call them CNC Mavens!

Are you are planning to purchase your very own CNC and want to know more before you commit? Maybe you are planning to build one and want to know how. Or maybe you already have your own CNC and want to learn more about its operation and potential. If any of these situations sound familiar, then this half day Introduction to CNC Routing Workshop is for you.

About the Introduction to CNC Routing Workshop

This half day (4 hours) CNC workshop is presented by Engineer Peter Schwarzel. This informative hands-on workshop provides you with a detailed overview of CNC machining including software, mechanics and operations. Yet this is no talk fest! This CNC workshop keeps theory to a minimum allowing you to make as much wood dust as possible as you complete a series of live CNC demonstrations right there in the studio using Peter’s mobile CNC router Brevis.

Workshop Breakdown

On commencement, participants will each be provided with an Introduction to CNC manual covering all the material studied during the workshop. The workshop is broken into 4 key sessions each covering aspects of the technology and each concluding with a live demonstration of Brevis in action. Check out the schedule.

Session 1 – Tool chains & Workflows

Session 1 is an overview of CAD & CAM then concludes with a functional bed clamp machining exercise. You can take a clamp home with you.

Session 2 – Machine Mechanics

This is a deep dive into all the mechanics from motors, to setting up a job, through to drive systems and spindles. Concludes with a pencil engraving exercise. Yes, you can take the pencil home with you as well.

Session 3 – Feed Speeds & Tooling

Session 3 covers all aspects of CNC machining and tooling and concludes with a 3D pocket machining exercise.

Session 4 - Review

This is your chance to review all the material covered in the CNC workshop, and Peter will machine some of your project requests.

What do you mean by project requests?

When you register for this workshop, you will be sent a quick survey asking you for feedback and some ideas on what to make in Session 4. Peter won’t have time to make them all, yet some of you will get lucky.

Key Learning Outcomes

This Introduction to CNC Routing Workshop is designed as your personal crash course in CNC covering all the general aspects of the technology. This workshop is perfect for anyone who is new to CNC and who is looking to learn more before purchasing or building their own CNC. The workshop is also perfect for anyone who may already have their own CNC machine and are looking to learn more about its operation and potential.

In detail you will learn:

  • Use of CAM software & creation of G-code
  • Operational workflow of CNC machining
  • Safe use of CNC machines and machine controllers
  • Understanding efficient feeds, speeds and tooling choices
  • Synchronising CAD-CAM and the CNC machine
  • Machining strategies, hold downs and multiple set ups
  • And generally, expand your outlook of what can be done or how to do it.

If you were seeking a one stop introductory CNC workshop, you have found it.

Who is Peter Schwarzel

Peter is a semi-retired engineer and digital manufacturer who builds CNC machines and freely shares his extensive engineering knowledge with interested people. Peter has used his mastery of advanced materials and digital manufacturing technologies to design bespoke machinery and light structures in the Cycling, Yachting and Automotive industries. Peter has also designed bespoke machines and industrial robots. Based in Northern NSW, Peter now focuses on making CNC machine kits for makers through his business Tetra Motion. Come join Peter and allow him to guide you on your creative CNC journey at the Wood Play Studio.

Who is Brevis

Brevis is a portable CNC router used for demonstrations and training designed and built by Peter Schwarzel. Brevis has all the features of a large CNC machine distilled down to a benchtop model. Brevis’s working envelope is X650mm, Y570mm and Z140mm with a 400W DC spindle. This machine has been used by Tetra Motion over the last 6 years as a development machine for testing various software and hardware solutions. Occasionally Brevis has also been used as a Laser engraver and a plotter. In its time Brevis has made signs, model boats, guitar parts, ceremonial objects, boomerangs and various machine parts.

What do I need to bring?

Participants must bring their own eye protection and hearing protection. Please wear sturdy clothes and covered shoes. Everything required to complete the workshop is supplied. You do not need a computer, just bring a note pad and pen.
