What is Raw Beginner Joinery?
 
Raw Beginner Joinery is for people who want to learn the fundamentals of completing handmade joinery. We assume that participants have no prior knowledge thus the course is suitable for the absolute raw beginner.
 
What happens in the course?
 
Participants in this Raw Beginner Joinery course will learn to mark out and hand cut a series of classic woodworking joints using only hand tools including:
 
•    A Half Lap joint
•    A Mortise & Tenon joint
•    A Box Joint
•    And a Dovetail Joint.
     
The four joints will fit together to make a decorative square frame. Something to take home to contemplate and impress friends and family.
 
Participants will also learn about wood, how to read the grain, wood movement, what materials for which job and how to order them. The course will also cover basic hand tool sharpening techniques and safety.
 
How long is the course?
 
Raw Beginner Joinery is a series of 4 x 3 hour workshops held every Wednesday
evening over four weeks starting November 20. Each workshop starts at 6.00pm and concludes at 9.00pm. There is a maximum of 6 people in the course so you are assured to receive all the support you may need. You can work at your own pace throughout the course, refreshments are provided.
 
What Core Skills are developed?
 
This raw beginner joinery course will equip you with fundamental hand skills that you can take of your woodworking journey including:
 
Measuring & marking out with a knife
Using Japanese pull saws
Chisel work - chopping and paring
Using hand planes and the shooting board
Maintaining and sharpening hand tools
Understanding wood behaviour 
Problem solving and overcoming the inevitable challenges that woodworking presents
 
The Experience
 
This is woodworking so it will be both a challenging and fun experience. You will be learning alongside like-minded people developing your skills in a non-competitive environment. This course is suitable for new woodworkers wanting a challenge, and the more experienced seeking to build their skills.
 
Who is John Madden
 
John is an award-winning woodworker and designer who works with a range of materials including solid timber and composites. John has worked on a diverse range of projects including custom furniture, hotel and super yacht interiors. John is an experienced instructor who is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping you develop your craft skills.
 
Details and Preparation
 
All materials and equipment necessary to complete the course are supplied, you need to wear sturdy clothes and shoes. Refreshments and snacks are provided. There are a maximum of six participants to ensure you have all the support you need while participating in the course.
