This Fish Serving Board is a simple object, yet it is packed full of style and woodworking technique. The body is made from Blackwood, the head, tail and fins from Jarrah. Tongue and groove joinery fixes the head and tail to the body. The fins are hand shaped and glued to the body. All the components are templated. The piece is shaped by both machine and hand. The serving board is hand sanded and finished in a food grade oil. Overall finished dimensions 20 x 280 x 620mm.

What happens in this course?

 

Starting with rough sawn boards you will first learn how to dimension wood using machines. Then you will joint and join the body using hand tools. You will cut your fish out with the bandsaw and use the router to machine the joinery. Finally, you will shape and finish the piece by hand. Step by step you will:

 

  • Machine wood using the jointer and thicknesser
  • Joint and join wood using hand planes
  • Setup and use both the table and handheld router
  • Explore various gluing up techniques
  • Use templates to mark out the various shapes
  • Use the bandsaw to cut out your components
  • Use hand tools such as the spokeshave and rasp to shape your piece
  • Sand and finish your piece by hand

 

This course is short, yet still provides you with experience in broad range of fundamental woodworking process using both machines and hand tools. 

 

What Core Skills are developed?

 

Though the Fish Serving Board project is relatively simple, the piece is packed full of technique. During the course you will have the opportunity to develop a several core skills including:

 

  • Understanding wood behaviour and how to work with this natural material
  • Design development through to template making and template use
  • Maintaining, tuning and using woodworking machinery
  • Sharpening, tuning and using hand tools
  • Hand shaping and finishing techniques
  • Problem solving and overcoming the inevitable challenges that woodworking presents

This is woodworking so it will be both a challenging and fun experience. You will be learning alongside like-minded people developing your skills in a non-competitive environment. This course is suitable for new woodworkers wanting a challenge, and the more experienced seeking to build their skills.

 

Who is John Madden

 

John is an award-winning woodworker and designer who works with a range of materials including solid timber and composites. John has worked on a diverse range of projects including custom furniture, hotel and super yacht interiors. John is an experienced instructor who is passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping you develop your craft skills.

 

Details and Preparation

 

This Make a Fish Serving Board course is held over four consecutive Tuesday evenings starting November 18, 5.00pm to 9.00pm. All materials and equipment necessary to complete the workshop are supplied, you need to bring PPE and wear sturdy clothes and shoes. Refreshments and snacks are provided. There are only four participants to ensure you have all the support you need while participating in the course. Participants use of machinery is limited and supervised and only permissible once the participants has been inducted on its use. The first evening of the course is dedicated to the use of machinery.
