The speakers you will make feature MARKAUDIO CHR-70 drivers, solid Red Oak front baffles fitted to an acoustically treated and painted MDF speaker box. You will complete all parts of the build over four three-hour sessions, the course is limited to 6 participants so you will receive all the support you will need.
Workshop Breakdown
This speaker build course is divided up into four, three-hour Saturday morning workshops.
Workshop 1. Build the speaker boxes
Your two speaker boxes measure 155mm wide, 185mm deep and 285mm high. Each box is built from 18mm MDF mitred on each edge with the back rebated in flush. You will be using the table saw to cut out all the components and saw the mitre joints. You will then glue the speaker box together and fit the rebated back panel neatly using a hand plane.
Workshop 2. Make the speaker baffle and paint the speaker boxes
You will drill the rear speaker ports into your boxes, then sand and undercoat the boxes setting them aside to dry. You will then cut out two solid Red Oak baffles for the front of your speaker boxes, drill and route out the speaker ports, and then you will hand sand the baffles and arris all the edges ready for finishing. By the end of this session, you can add a first topcoat to your two speaker boxes of hard enamel acrylic paint from a choice of colours.
Workshop 3. Insulating the speaker box and fitting the baffle
You will start by lining the speaker boxes with acoustic dampening material and then fit the rear speaker port. Then you will glue your two baffles into place on both speaker boxes. If there’s time, you can add a second topcoat of paint.
Workshop 4. Installing the drivers and finishing
In the final session you will solder the driver wiring into place and then assemble the speakers to completion. If there is enough time you can add a third topcoat of paint to the speaker box. And voila! They are done.
During the course you will use the table saw, router, drill press and various hand tools including planes. You will also learn about soldering and basic electronics.
